book design

Once the content of the publication has been deeply analyzed, it is necessary to find the most proper ways to communicate this. The layout must represent both esthetical and commercial values. The main elements that must be considered in order to obtain a successful editorial design are the following:

Typographical Legibility

Typographic Box

Grille or Editorial Reticulation

Material of Support

The format is the total area available to design. This area comprises the margins and the typographic box. Sometimes the designer can choose the format, which gives him more possibilities regarding composition. However, this is generally predetermined and the designer must adjust his design to the standard measurements.

Margins, white spaces that surround the composition, have an esthetic function and a practical function. On the one hand, they make the reading more pleasant. On the other hand, they make the binding process easier.

There are different types of formats according to the amount of columns:

One column format: this is used for books. Generally, only the text or the image is shown in one page.

Two columns format: this makes the combination between text and images easier.

Three columns format: this provides the possibility to combine images and texts of different sizes.

Four columns format: this is generally used in newspapers and magazines since they make the composition easier when the text is large.

In all cases it is important to consider the columns sizes since they will determine the typography size.
